Winter Park, Fla. - For the game's first 73 minutes, the No. 16 Saint Xavier University
men's soccer team played tough against a top-ranked NCAA Division II foe in No.
6 Rollins College (Fla.). Unfortunately,
the final 17 minutes of regulation were not as promising as two late goals by
the Tars in the 74th and 85th minutes, respectively,
handed SXU its first loss since August 28.
Senior midfielder Jeff Hiltrop (Rockford, Ill./Colorado
State-Pueblo/Boylan Catholic) and junior midfielder Al Palar (Zabrze,
Poland/Plainfield Central) each finished with a shot-on-goal for the Cougars
Wednesday.
Rollins put the
game's first goal up right at the 74th minute when junior midfielder
Nick Sowers took the ball down the left side and beat SXU freshman keeper Kyle
Held (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) on a shot to the upper corner of the net. The play was set up by an assist from junior
defender Matt Bauchle. Just under 12
minutes later, the Tars added some insurance with a second goal off the foot of
senior midfielder Stephen Wright from 40 yards out. Sowers and senior defender Kevin Boone
recorded assists on the second score.
Held played the entire game in goal for the Cougars finishing with four
saves.
Saint Xavier (8-3-1
overall/4-0-1 CCAC) wraps up its Florida trip on Friday, October 15, with a 7
p.m. (eastern) game against Flagler College (Fla.). The Cougars then return home to pick up their
conference slate hosting Robert Morris University (Ill.) on Wednesday, October
20, at 7 p.m. at Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field.
