Men's Cross Country - Wed, Oct. 6, 2010

CHICAGO - Led by another top performance by freshman Brian Corcoran (Chicago, Ill./Brother Rice), the Saint Xavier University men's cross country team competed well at Loyola University's Sean Earl Lakefront Invitational over the weekend. This is a prestigious meet with over 40 teams participating from all over the United States and Canada. Corcoran finished in 120th place among the 523 competitors in the field with the time of 26:31 on the 8K (8,000 meters) course. He was followed by junior Matt Rychel (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) with a time of 26:54.

Next up for the Cougars was a trio of freshmen led by Izak Velasquez (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) in 27:31, followed by Shane Kenney (Porter, Ind./Chesterton) in 27:35 and Chris Sarna (Palos Park, Ill./Stagg) in 27:40. Senior Roy Witty (Mount Greenwood, Ill./Marist) was the sixth SXU finisher in a time of 27:44 and the final scorer for the Cougars was junior Brandon Hummer (Willowbrook, Ill./Hinsdale South) at 28:02. Saint Xavier men's cross country coach Ed McAllister thought the times were affected by the weather conditions, but that the overall team performance was solid with the Cougars finishing in 29th place.

"Once again, I am impressed by the continual progress of Brian Corcoran," said McAllister. "While the conditions (60+ mph winds) affected the times overall, I thought that we had some solid performances. Corcoran continues to improve each week and the emergence of Velasquez, Kenney and Sarna gives me good reason for optimism in for the future. We are heading into the real ‘meat' of our season now, and we will need regular tough performances out of our young runners. I am confident that they are ready to provide them."

Saint Xavier heads to South Bend, Ind., on Friday, October 8 to take part in the Bethel College (Ind.) Invitational. The men's race kicks off at 5 p.m. at Saint Patrick's Golf Course in South Bend.
