CHICAGO - Led by six catches for 85 yards and three touchdowns by senior wide
receiver Xavier Torres (Chicago, Ill./Central Michigan University/Lane Tech),
the No. 3 ranked Saint Xavier University football team overcame wet and windy conditions
to pick up a 46-21 Homecoming victory over Mid-States Football Association
(MSFA) Mideast League foe Taylor University (Ind.) Saturday evening at Bruce R.
Deaton Memorial Field in Chicago. Junior
kicker Tom Lynch (Frankfort, Ill./Southern Illinois/Joliet Junior
College/Lincoln-Way East) also had a big night for the Cougars connecting on each
of his three field goals and all five extra-point attempts to score 14 points
and move up to No. 2 all-time on SXU's career scoring list for kickers with 168

Other notable performers for the Cougars Saturday were senior quarterback
Anthony Kropp (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East), senior wide receiver Mike Maher (Plainfield, Ill./Providence Catholic) and senior linebacker Brendan Sheehy (Chicago, Ill./Brother Rice).
Kropp completed 24 of his 36 pass attempts for 296 yards and four
touchdowns. Maher led the receiving
corps with 11 catches for 82 yards and a score.
Sheehy led an impressive defensive effort for SXU with seven total
tackles (four solos), a fumble recovery, an interception and three quarterback
The Trojans got on the scoreboard first Saturday with a four-yard touchdown
pass by senior quarterback Shaun Addison to senior wideout Trenton Schmale at
the 6:12 mark of the first quarter.
However, the SXU offense got rolling behind Torres tying the game, 7-7,
on a six-yard touchdown reception from Kropp less than two minutes later. Torres opened the second quarter with a five-yard
reception for a touchdown to put SXU ahead, 14-7. Midway through the second frame, Torres broke
free for a 61-yard strike to make the score, 21-7. Lynch went on a field-goal tear in the
closing 1:15 of the half connecting on three consecutive attempts of 21, 26 and
46 yards, respectively, thanks in part to a late turnover by Taylor.
Leading 30-7 at the half, Saint Xavier would add to its big lead at the
8:16 mark of the third quarter when junior running back KJ Franklin (Crete,
Ill./Crete-Monee) punched it in from two yards out. A bad snap by the Trojans sent a punt attempt
out of the back of the end zone for a SXU safety to make the score, 39-7, with
7:57 remaining in the third quarter.
Maher would cap the Cougars' scoring for the night on a six-yard
touchdown reception two minutes later to put his team ahead, 46-7. Taylor would score a pair of touchdowns in
the fourth quarter on six-yard receptions, but would not threaten the large
Saint Xavier (6-0 overall/3-0 MSFA) continues its home stand on Saturday,
October 9, with a big MSFA Mideast League match-up against No. 15 Marian
University (Ind.). The game is slated
for a 6 p.m. kickoff.
