CHICAGO - Led by six catches for 85 yards and three touchdowns by senior wide receiver Xavier Torres (Chicago, Ill./Central Michigan University/Lane Tech), the No. 3 ranked Saint Xavier University football team overcame wet and windy conditions to pick up a 46-21 Homecoming victory over Mid-States Football Association (MSFA) Mideast League foe Taylor University (Ind.) Saturday evening at Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field in Chicago. Junior kicker Tom Lynch (Frankfort, Ill./Southern Illinois/Joliet Junior College/Lincoln-Way East) also had a big night for the Cougars connecting on each of his three field goals and all five extra-point attempts to score 14 points and move up to No. 2 all-time on SXU's career scoring list for kickers with 168 points. With the win Saturday, Saint Xavier stays perfect on the year with a 6-0 mark and improves to 3-0 in the MSFA.

Other notable performers for the Cougars Saturday were senior quarterback Anthony Kropp (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East), senior wide receiver Mike Maher (Plainfield, Ill./Providence Catholic) and senior linebacker Brendan Sheehy (Chicago, Ill./Brother Rice). Kropp completed 24 of his 36 pass attempts for 296 yards and four touchdowns. Maher led the receiving corps with 11 catches for 82 yards and a score. Sheehy led an impressive defensive effort for SXU with seven total tackles (four solos), a fumble recovery, an interception and three quarterback hurries.

The Trojans got on the scoreboard first Saturday with a four-yard touchdown pass by senior quarterback Shaun Addison to senior wideout Trenton Schmale at the 6:12 mark of the first quarter. However, the SXU offense got rolling behind Torres tying the game, 7-7, on a six-yard touchdown reception from Kropp less than two minutes later. Torres opened the second quarter with a five-yard reception for a touchdown to put SXU ahead, 14-7. Midway through the second frame, Torres broke free for a 61-yard strike to make the score, 21-7. Lynch went on a field-goal tear in the closing 1:15 of the half connecting on three consecutive attempts of 21, 26 and 46 yards, respectively, thanks in part to a late turnover by Taylor.

Leading 30-7 at the half, Saint Xavier would add to its big lead at the 8:16 mark of the third quarter when junior running back KJ Franklin (Crete, Ill./Crete-Monee) punched it in from two yards out. A bad snap by the Trojans sent a punt attempt out of the back of the end zone for a SXU safety to make the score, 39-7, with 7:57 remaining in the third quarter. Maher would cap the Cougars' scoring for the night on a six-yard touchdown reception two minutes later to put his team ahead, 46-7. Taylor would score a pair of touchdowns in the fourth quarter on six-yard receptions, but would not threaten the large lead.

Saint Xavier (6-0 overall/3-0 MSFA) continues its home stand on Saturday, October 9, with a big MSFA Mideast League match-up against No. 15 Marian University (Ind.). The game is slated for a 6 p.m. kickoff.
