CHICAGO - Junior forward Matt Klancic (Aurora,
Ill./Bowling Green State University/Waubonsie Valley) scored the game-winning
goal in the seventh minute of overtime to lead the Saint Xavier University
men's soccer team to a thrilling 2-1 rally win over No. 16 ranked and
previously unbeaten Judson University (Ill.) on a windy Saturday afternoon for
Homecoming Weekend at Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field in Chicago. Senior midfielder Ben Johnson (Woodridge,
Ill./Western Illinois University/Naperville North) provided the game-winning
assist off a free kick placed beautifully in front of the goal. The Cougars improve to 6-2-1 overall and
2-0-1 in the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) with the win,
while the Eagles fall to 8-1-1 on the season and 1-1-1 in the conference
standings.
The connection
between Klancic and Johnson was not the first of the day for the pair after
Johnson found a streaking Klancic with a perfectly placed cross to score the
game-tying goal off a header in the 76th minute. After a scoreless first half, Judson got on the
scoreboard with an unassisted goal on a laser shot from 30 yards out by junior
midfielder Corey Burke following a volley.
SXU freshman keeper Kyle Held (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) played well in
goal finishing the game with seven saves.
The Cougars held the total shots advantage, 15-12, but the Eagles had
eight shots-on-goal compared to seven for the home team.
Saint Xavier (5-2-1 overall/1-0-1 CCAC) heads to Milwaukee, Wis., on
Wednesday, October 6, to face off against conference foe Cardinal Stritch
University (Wis.). The game is scheduled
for a 5 p.m. start.
