Midlothian, Ill. - Despite a 7-2 lead heading into the bottom of the ninth inning, the Saint Xavier University baseball team could not stop Robert Morris College (Ill.) from posting six runs in the final frame to steal an 8-7 victory in Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) action Wednesday in Midlothian, Ill. Senior catcher Brian Grupp (Granger, Ind./Mishawaka Penn) recorded three hits and two RBI in the game for the Cougars, who drop to 11-11 overall on the season and 4-1 in the CCAC.
SXU scattered 13 hits in the game en route to its seven runs, but left 14 runners on base throughout the game. RMC mustered seven hits for its eight runs. The Cougars allowed five walks and three hits in the bottom of the ninth inning to help create the Eagles' six-run rally. RMC scored all six of its runs in the ninth with two outs.
Senior righthander Ryan Quigley (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Catholic) got the start for Saint Xavier and threw well pitching seven innings and allowing just four hits, two runs (both unearned), and three walks with five strikeouts. Sophomore rightie Dan Miller (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Catholic) came in for Quigley in the eighth and threw 1.2 innings allowing two hits, five runs (all earned), and three walks with two strikeouts. Junior lefthander Kyle Zilis (Oak Forest, Ill./Marist) took the loss facing three batters in the ninth and allowing two walks and a hit en route to the game-ending run.
Saint Xavier (11-11 overall/4-1 CCAC) takes a break from its conference slate to take on non-conference foe Madonna University (Mich.) for a three-game, weekend series. The series begins on Friday, April 6, with a nine-inning game scheduled for 4 p.m. at Richard R. Ferrell Memorial Field in Chicago. The Saturday doubleheader to complete the series will start at 12 p.m.
