CHICAGO - Junior midfielder Casey Meehan (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) scored a goal in the 71st minute, but it was not enough as the Saint Xavier University women's soccer team came up short against Marian University (Ind.), 3-1, Saturday afternoon in non-conference action at Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field in Chicago. Marian would outshoot SXU, 22-16, in the game, including a 12-10 advantage in shots-on-goal. Meehan's goal came off a deflected save from Marian goalkeeper Jessica Fisher.
Junior goalkeeper Ashley Shugar (Lake Orion, Mich./Western Illinois University/Lake Orion) had eight saves for the Cougars in the game's first 72 minutes. Freshman Sarah Schrader (Metamora, Ill./Illinois Central College/Metamora) would finish the game in goal and recorded a save. Leading the SXU offense were sophomore forward Elysha Peele (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) with five shots-on-goal and junior midfielder Nancy Schueth (Lincoln, Neb./Saint Pius X) with three shots-on-goal.
Saint Xavier (5-4-0 overall/1-0 CCAC) will host Calumet College of St. Joseph (Ind.) in Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) action on Wednesday, September 29. The game is scheduled for a 5 p.m. start at Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field.
