CHICAGO - Senior midfielder Alan Bickel (Aurora, Ill./Northern Illinois University /Waubonsie Valley) capitalized on a well-placed header by junior midfielder Al Palar (Zabrze, Poland/Plainfield Central) to score the game's lone goal in a 1-0 victory for Saint Xavier University over Aquinas College (Mich.) in NAIA men's soccer action Wednesday evening at Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field in Chicago. The score came in the 35th minute of play and was set up off a throw-in by junior forward Matt Klancic (Aurora, Ill./Bowling Green State University/Waubonsie Valley). The win improved SXU's overall record to 5-2 and ended a seven-game win streak for the visiting Saints, who came into tonight's contest with a record of 7-1 and receiving votes in the latest NAIA Top 25 Poll (Sept. 21).
Freshman keeper Kyle Held (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) had another outstanding performance in front of the net finishing the night with seven saves. He now boasts three shutouts on the year with Wednesday's victory. The Cougars came out firing posting 15 shots in the first half alone. Junior midfielder Adrian Guzman (Chicago, Ill./De La Salle) led SXU's offensive attack with two shots-on-goal in the game.
Saint Xavier (5-2 overall/1-0 CCAC) returns to its Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) schedule on Tuesday, September 28, with a home game against Calumet College of St. Joseph (Ind.). The game is slated for a 7 p.m. start at Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field in Chicago.
