Marion, Ind. - Behind an all-tournament
performance by sophomore libero Christine Bowe (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers
Grove South), the Saint Xavier University volleyball team overcame a rocky
start and rallied back to split its four matches this weekend at the Best
Western Classic hosted by Indiana Wesleyan University in Marion, Ind. The Cougars (10-5 overall) dropped both
Friday matches to Bethel University (Ind.) and Mount Vernon Nazarene University
(Ohio), but came back strong in the two Saturday matches defeating Goshen
College (Ind.) and Cedarville University (Ohio), respectively. Bowe was strong defensively throughout the
weekend finishing the Classic with 75 total digs.
SXU never got into a rhythm in its early match Friday against Bethel
University (Ind.) falling in three sets 17-25, 20-25 and 22-25. Junior middle blocker Kim Scudder (Elmhurst,
Ill./York Community) led the offensive attack for the Cougars with 10 kills and
also posted seven total blocks (six assists).
Junior setter Ashley August (LaGrange Park, Ill./Lyons Township) posted
16 set assists, while Bowe tallied a team-best 10 digs. Despite winning the first set, SXU had
trouble with Mount Vernon Nazarene in its next match falling 25-22, 12-25,
20-25 and 21-25. Sophomore outside
hitters Kayla Mullaney (Elmhurst, Ill./York Community) and Kelly Knudsen (Oak
Lawn, Ill./Oak Lawn Community) recorded 15 and 13 kills, respectively, in
Friday's second match. Junior setter
Jaclyn Major (Lockport, Ill./Lockport Township) also played well with 38 assists
and 16 digs. Bowe led the defensive
front with 22 digs.
Against a tough Goshen squad, the Cougars had to rally back after losing
the first two sets, but completed the rally in five 18-25, 25-27, 25-21, 25-13
and 15-9. Mullaney helped lead the
charge with 20 kills and 18 digs. Major
set things up with 20 assists, while Bowe was solid again with 25 digs. SXU kept up its winning ways with a victory
over Cedarville University (Ohio) in the late match 25-18, 29-27, 23-25 and
25-18. Mullaney finished with 19 kills
and four blocks (two solos) and Knudsen was tough as well with 15 kills and 12
digs. Major posted a team-best 52
assists and Bowe again led the defense with 18 digs.
Saint Xavier (10-5 overall/1-1 CCAC) returns home to
host a Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) match against Illinois
Institute of Technology (IIT) on Tuesday, September 21. The match is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start
Tuesday at the Shannon Center in Chicago.
