CHICAGO - Behind goals from Kelly
Steinhaus (Lemont, Ill./Lemont) and Joanna Janulis (Bolingbrook, Ill./Benet
Academy), the Saint Xavier University women's soccer team was able to defeat
Madonna University (Mich.), 2-0, Saturday afternoon at Bruce R. Deaton Memorial
Field in Chicago. SXU out-shot MU, 19-8,
including eight shots-on-goal. Junior
goalkeeper Sarah Schrader (Metamora, Ill./Illinois Central College/Metamora)
recorded her first win and shutout of the year behind five saves.
Steinhaus' goal
came in the 39th minute off of a deflection from a free kick by
sophomore Elysha Peele (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) to open the scoring. The
Cougars would take their 1-0 lead into the half. Janulis would add an insurance goal in the 74th
minute off a beautiful pass from freshman Anita Balciunas (Brookfield,
Ill./Riverside-Brookfield) that caught her in stride right in front of the
goal.
Saint Xavier (4-3-0
overall) heads to Joliet, Ill., to open its Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic
Conference (CCAC) schedule on Wednesday, September 22. The game against University of St. Francis
(Ill.) is scheduled to start at 7 p.m.
