CHICAGO - Saint Xavier University senior forward
Kelly Steinhaus (Lemont, Ill./Lemont) found a hole in the defense and
capitalized on it with the game-winning goal in the 62nd minute of
play during a 1-0 victory over University of Saint Francis (Ind.) Friday
afternoon at Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field in Chicago. Steinhaus was able to beat her defender and
broke free for a powerful shot that sailed just past the USF's goalie's
outstretched hands and into the lower left corner of the net. Sophomore midfielder Tammy Contorno (Lemont,
Ill./Lemont) provided the game-winning assist for the Cougars on the score.
SXU was extremely
aggressive offensively throughout Friday's game taking 25 total shots,
including 18 on goal. Saint Francis
keeper Kari Baughn was impressive in front of the net stopping 17 of the shot
attempts to finish with 17 saves. Saint
Xavier keeper Ashley Shugar (Lake Orion, Mich./Western Illinois University/Lake
Orion) was impressive in her own right notching her third shutout of the season
behind eight saves on the afternoon. Steinhaus
and junior forward Larissa Jondle (Lincoln, Neb./Saint Pius X) each paced the
Cougars with four shots-on-goal Friday.
Saint Xavier (3-3-0
overall) wrap up the SXU/Judson University Invite Saturday afternoon with a
game against Madonna University (Mich.).
The start time for the match-up is 4 p.m. at Bruce R. Deaton Memorial
Field.
