Olathe, Kan. - Saint Xavier University junior pitcher Ashley Shearer (Beecher, Ill./Beecher) was named the NAIA National Softball Pitcher of the Week Wednesday after her impressive individual outings in two of the team's four wins last week. Shearer helped lead the No. 23 ranked Cougars to victories over Purdue University-North Central (Ind.) and Calumet College (Ind.) on the week. Shearer is just the second SXU softball pitcher or player to earn the national weekly honor since current softball coach Myra Minuskin took over the team back in 2001. Cougar Hall of Famer Stacie Eschmann (inducted in February 2007) was the only other player during the Minuskin era to earn NAIA National Softball Pitcher of the Week honors back on April 9, 2001.
Shearer was unstoppable in her two starts last week throwing a two-hit shutout in her first appearance, a 3-0 victory over Purdue University-North Central (Ind.), and then notching a perfect game (no runs, no hits, no walks) against Calumet College (Ind.) last Friday in an 11-0 win for the Cougars (five innings). She racked up 13 strikeouts in 12 innings over the two complete-games stretch.
"Being named the national pitcher of the week at any level in any sport is an incredible accomplishment," said Minuskin. "This recognition is very well-deserved, because Ashley is such a tremendous competitor and hard-worker. She had an amazing week last week and hopefully there will be plenty more for her."
The Cougars (11-7 overall/5-1 CCAC) continues its season Thursday with a road doubleheader against CCAC foe Trinity International University (Ill.). Start time for the twin bill is 3 p.m. in Deerfield, Ill.
