CHICAGO - Sophomore outside hitter Kelly Knudsen (Oak Lawn, Ill./Oak Lawn Community) finished with team-bests of 14 kills and four service aces, but it was not enough to lift Saint Xavier University to a victory despite a hard-fought match against No. 19 Olivet Nazarene University in the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) opener Tuesday night at the Shannon Center in Chicago. The Cougars dropped the first set 25-12, but rallied to take sets two and three by scores of 25-15 and 25-16. However, the Tigers regrouped and won the final two sets of the match 25-17 and 15-9.

Senior outside hitter Kayla Mullaney (Elmhurst, Ill./York Community), who was named the CCAC Volleyball Player of the Week earlier today, was solid recording 12 kills and seven digs. Junior setter Jaclyn Major (Lockport, Ill./Lockport Township) posted a team-high 32 assists as well as 14 digs for the Cougars, while junior defensive specialist Erin Sebo (Downers Grove, Ill./St. Scholastica/Downers Grove North) and sophomore libero Christine Bowe (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove South) led the defensive charge with 23 and 22 digs, respectively. Junior middle blocker Kim Scudder (Elmhurst, Ill./York Community) finished the match with four block assists. The Tigers were led by seniors Sara Byrne and Tara Schmidt, who led the offensive attack with 10 kills apiece.

Saint Xavier (7-3 overall/0-1 CCAC) takes the weekend off and continues its conference season on Tuesday, September 14, with a road match against Purdue University-North Central (Ind.). The match is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start.
