Bourbonnais, Ill. - Behind a career day from freshman designated hitter Nicole Fletcher (Lowell, Ind./Lowell), the No. 23 ranked Saint Xavier University softball team split a pair of games with Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) rival Olivet Nazarene University (Ill.) Tuesday in Bourbonnais, Ill. The Cougars dropped the first game, 7-2, but rebounded in the nightcap for a commanding 15-3 victory in five innings. Fletcher went 3-for-7 on the day with two home runs, a double, four runs scored, and six RBI.
SXU had trouble getting its offense to click in game one managing only three hits in the game, while ONU used nine hits to help produce its seven runs. Fletcher and junior left fielder Laurie Felton (Oak Lawn, Ill./Oak Lawn) each hit solo home runs in the first game for Saint Xavier to complete its scoring. Junior righthander Ashley Shearer (Beecher, Ill./Beecher) took the loss (4-2) on the mound pitching the first five innings and allowing six hits, five runs (all earned), and a walk with two strikeouts. After leading 3-2 heading into the bottom of the sixth inning, ONU posted four more runs in the frame to pull away.
However, the Cougars were not to be outdone in game two exploding for 15 runs on 13 hits over just five innings to end the game early by the conference's mercy rule (eight run lead after five innings). Fletcher led the offensive charge going 2-for-4 with a double, homer, three runs scored, and five RBI. Five of the nine SXU players in the line-up posted two hits in the game. Freshman rightie Jalyn Shearer (Beecher, Ill./Beecher) earned the win (3-2) for SXU throwing all five innings and giving up six hits, three runs (two earned), and three walks with two strikeouts.
Saint Xavier (11-7 overall/5-1 CCAC) continues its conference slate on Thursday, April 5, with a road doubleheader against Trinity International University (Ill.). The twinbill is scheduled to start at 3 p.m. Thursday in Deerfield, Ill.
