Palos Heights, Ill. - For the third straight game, a 2-1 score has haunted the Saint Xavier University women's soccer team as the Cougars dropped a 2-1 decision to Carroll College (Mont.) Monday afternoon to wrap up play in the 2010 SXU/Trinity Christian Invite in Palos Heights, Ill. The Fighting Saints scored both their goals in first-half action before the Cougars cut the deficit in half on a late penalty kick score by junior midfielder Nancy Schueth (Lincoln, Neb./Saint Pius X). With the loss, SXU falls to 1-3 overall this season.
Carroll notched the game's first goal in the 13th minute when junior forward Meghan O'Connell found the back of the net on an unassisted play. With less than four minutes remaining in the first half, the Fighting Saints struck again on another unassisted goal, this time off the foot of junior midfielder Tayt Ellison. At the 85:39 mark of the game, the Cougars were awarded a penalty kick and Schueth capitalized on the shot to record her third goal of the young season. Junior keeper Ashley Shugar (Lake Orion, Mich./Western Illinois University/Lake Orion) posted a save for SXU in the first half before junior Sarah Schrader (Metamora, Ill./Illinois Central College/Metamora) replaced her in the second half and recorded three stops. Both teams finished with six shots-on-goal Monday.
Saint Xavier (1-3-0 overall) heads to Grand Rapids, Mich., on Saturday, September 11, to take on non-conference foe Aquinas College (Mich.). The game is scheduled for a 2 p.m. (central) start.
