CHICAGO - Despite a late game-tying goal by senior
midfielder Kelly Steinhaus (Lemont, Ill./Lemont) in the 86th minute,
the Saint Xavier University women's soccer team could not come away with the
rally win and fell in double overtime to Lindenwood University (Mo.), 2-1, at
Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field in Chicago.
The game was part of the 2010 SXU/Trinity Christian Invite with the two
remaining games played Monday at Trinity Christian College in Palos Heights,
Ill. Senior forward Paige Hickey scored
the game-winning goal in the 104th minute on an unassisted breakaway
from the right side.
1-0 at the halftime break after scoring in the 41st minute on a shot
by freshman forward Bailey Cody off a deflected save attempt by SXU junior
keeper Ashley Shugar (Lake Orion, Mich./Western Illinois University/Lake
Orion). Following the Steinhaus goal,
things would get interesting in the closing minutes of regulation as both teams
had opportunities to net the game-winner.
However, with neither team finding the back of the net, the game
proceeded to overtime periods and the Lions were able to capitalize on a
breakaway near the midpoint of the second extra frame. SXU finished the game with 21 shots,
including 13 on goal, while LU tallied 16 total shots with 11 on goal. Shugar tallied nine saves in the game for the
Cougars and Steinhaus posted four shots-on-goal.
Xavier (1-2-0 overall) wraps up play in the SXU/Trinity Christian Invite on
Monday, September 6, taking on Carroll College (Mont.) on the campus of Trinity
Christian College. The game is scheduled
for a 2 p.m. start in Palos Heights.
