Sophomore Kelly Knudsen had a huge day for the Cougars Saturday

CHICAGO - After defeating St. Catharine College (Ky.) and Grace College (Ind.) Friday, the Saint Xavier University women's volleyball team carried the momentum into Saturday and won its final two matches to sweep the competition at the 2010 SXU/IIT Crossover Tournament this weekend at the Shannon Center in Chicago. Sophomore outside hitter Kelly Knudsen (Oak Lawn, Ill./Oak Lawn Community) had a huge day for the Cougars finishing with a combined 33 kills and 14 digs. SXU posted wins over Evangel University (Mo.) and Kansas Wesleyan University (Kan.) on the day.

In the first match against Evangel, things looked bleak early as Saint Xavier dropped the first two sets by scores of 19-25 and 19-25. However, the Cougars regrouped and won the final three sets 25-22, 25-20 and 19-17 to rally for the victory. Knudsen posted a team-best 23 kills, while sophomore outside hitter Kayla Mullaney (Elmhurst, Ill./York Community) finished with 18 kills. Junior setter Jaclyn Major (Lockport, Ill./Lockport Township) recorded 43 assists and sophomore libero Christine Bowe (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove South) was impressive defensively with 15 digs.

Knudsen again led the offensive attack in a three-set match win over Kansas Wesleyan by scores of 25-20, 25-23 and 25-16. She finished with 10 kills in the match, while junior middle blocker Kim Scudder (Elmhurst, Ill./York Community) turned in eight kills and three service aces. Junior setter Ashley August (LaGrange, Ill./Lyons Township) posted a team-best 25 assists, while Mullaney finished with seven kills and team-high 11 digs.

Saint Xavier (7-2 overall) opens its Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) slate on Tuesday, September 7, with a tough home match-up against No. 12 Olivet Nazarene University (Ill.). The match is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start at the Shannon Center.
