SXU improves to 5-2 overall this season with Friday's wins

CHICAGO - Sophomore outside hitter Kayla Mullaney (Elmhurst, Ill./York Community) had a combined 24 kills and 17 digs as the Saint Xavier University women's volleyball team swept its opening two matches in the 2010 SXU/Illinois Tech Crossover Tournament Friday at the Shannon Center in Chicago. The Cougars (5-2 overall) won their first match against St. Catharine College (Ky.) in three straight sets (25-14, 25-20, 25-20) and then followed that performance by defeating Grace College (Ind.) in the late match by scores of 25-11, 25-20 and 25-20.

In Friday's opening match, Mullaney finished with team-bests of 11 kills and eight digs. Sophomore outside hitter Kelly Knudsen (Oak Lawn, Ill./Oak Lawn Community) also played well posting 10 kills and six digs, while junior setter Ashley August (LaGrange, Ill./Lyons Township) orchestrated the offense by dishing out 24 assists to go along with her three service aces. SXU was tough defensively finishing the match with eight total blocks, including five (two solos, three assisted) from junior middle blocker Kim Scudder (Elmhurst, Ill./York Community).

After losing its season opener to Grace College on the road, Saint Xavier got some revenge Friday night by beating the Lancers in three sets behind 13 kills and nine digs from Mullaney. Scudder recorded nine kills for the Cougars to go along with her four service aces, two solo blocks and three block assists. Junior setter Jaclyn Major (Lockport, Ill./Lockport Township) tallied 29 assists toward the winning effort.

Saint Xavier (5-2 overall) wraps up the SXU/IIT Crossover Tournament on Saturday, September 4. The Cougars take on Evangel University (Mo.) at 10 a.m. before finishing up with a 2 p.m. match against Kansas Wesleyan University (Kan.).
