CHICAGO - Senior midfielder Ben Johnson (Woodridge, Ill./Western Illinois/Naperville North) and junior midfielder Adrian Guzman (Chicago, Ill./De La Salle) combined to score the final two goals of the game, but it was not enough to erase an early 3-0 lead for Grand View University (Iowa) Saturday afternoon at Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field in Chicago. Despite the valiant rally attempt, the Cougars could not post a game-tying goal in the final minutes after Johnson pulled SXU to within a goal on a penalty kick in the 83rd minute. Saint Xavier had its chances though with 16 shots in the game, including 10 on goal. Grand View improves to 3-0-0 on the season with the win, while SXU falls to 1-2-0.

The Vikings wasted little time getting on the board scoring on an impressive shot by senior midfielder Augustine Faiz on a break-away from 10 yards out. Grand View would take the 1-0 lead into halftime and open the second half with a flurry of scoring. Just two and a half minutes into the second half, junior defender Per Poulsen scored off a deflected shot in the box to put the Vikings ahead, 2-0. Poulsen would strike again just two minutes later getting a header to the back of the net off a perfectly placed corner kick by sophomore midfielder Jonny MacAdam. Trailing 3-0 with 40 minutes to play in regulation, SXU would quickly regroup and get a goal from Guzman in the 50th minute off a shot in front of the goal set by an assist from junior forward Matt Klancic (Aurora, Ill./Bowling Green State/Waubonsie Valley). Johnson's penalty kick goal and a red card by a GVU player (which gave the Cougars an extra player advantage) in the 87th minute would make things interesting in the closing minutes, but Grand View would hold on to capture the victory.

Saint Xavier (1-2-0 overall) plays its third straight home game on Wednesday, September 1, with a non-conference match-up against Cornerstone University (Mich.). The game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start at Deaton Field.
