Winona Lake, Ind. - Sophomore outside hitter Kelly Knudsen (Oak Lawn, Ill./Oak Lawn Community) finished with 13 kills and three service aces, but it was not enough to lead the Saint Xavier University women's volleyball team to a season-opening victory Tuesday night. The Cougars (0-1 overall) fell in four sets to Grace College (Ind.) in non-conference action winning the first set 25-21, but dropping the next three by scores of 22-25, 12-25 and 22-25. Grace College improves to 4-1 on the season with the win.
In addition to Knudsen, junior middle blocker Kim Scudder (Elmhurst, Ill./York Community), sophomore outside hitter Kayla Mullaney (Elmhurst, Ill./York Community) and junior setter Jaclyn Major (Lockport, Ill./Lockport Township) also had solid individual efforts. Scudder finished the night with eight kills, two service aces and two total blocks (one solo, one assisted), while Mullaney posted 13 kills and 11 digs. August provided the offensive set-up recording 36 of the team's 39 total assists. Defensively, sophomore libero Christine Bowe (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove South) played well finishing with 10 digs.
Saint Xavier (0-1 overall) continues its season this weekend heading to Dearborn, Mich., to take part in the two-day University of Michigan-Dearborn Earlybird Challenge starting Friday, August 27. The Cougars open their first of four matches at the event with a 5:30 p.m. match against Madonna University (Mich.).
