CHICAGO - The Saint Xavier University men's track team sent an abbreviated squad downtown to DePaul University to take part in the Demon Relays on Tuesday, May 11. The 4x800 relay team was the only group from SXU that took part in the meet and they captured a first-place finish in the event in a meet-record time of 7:51.95 surpassing the previous mark by nearly 17 seconds. The relay consisted of sophomore Matt Rychel
(Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew), senior Manny Gonzalez (Chicago, Ill./St. Laurence), sophomore Dan Hasty (Oak Lawn, Ill./Brother Rice) and sophomore Brandon Hummer
(Willowbrook, Ill./Hinsdale South). Saint Xavier men's track coach Ed McAllister
was happy with his team's performance.
"This is the best that this relay team has performed so far this season and two of the members (Rychel and Hasty) had PR's(Personal Records)," said McAllister. "We still can improve, but this was a sterling performance against good competition."
The Cougars have one more outdoor meet this season to qualify members prior the NAIA Outdoor Track and Field National Championships. SXU will head to Naperville, Ill., on May 13-14 to take part in the Dr. Keeler Last Chance Meet hosted by North Central College.
