Joliet, Ill. - Saint Xavier University senior right fielder Nicole Barker (Chicago Heights, Ill./Marian Catholic) and junior pitcher Ashley Shearer swept NAIA Region VII and Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) Player and Pitcher of the Week honors, respectively, Tuesday after their impressive individual outings in SXU's four wins in softball action last week. Barker and Shearer helped lead the No. 23 ranked Cougars to four straight CCAC victories last week and improved the team's overall record to 10-6 overall and a perfect 4-0 mark in conference play.
Barker went 11-for-14 (.786) at the plate and recorded a double, three runs scored, and four RBI. She also went 2-for-3 on stolen base attempts and racked up a slugging percentage of .857 on the week. Shearer was unstoppable in her two starts last week throwing a two-hit shutout in her first appearance, a 3-0 victory over Purdue University-North Central (Ind.), and then notching a perfect game (no runs, no hits, no walks) against Calumet College (Ind.) last Friday in an 11-0 win for the Cougars (five innings). She racked up 13 strikeouts over the two-game stretch.
The Cougars (10-6 overall/4-0 CCAC) continues its season Tuesday with a road doubleheader against CCAC rival Olivet Nazarene University (Ill.). Start time for the twin bill is 3 p.m. in Bourbonnais, Ill.
