CHICAGO - Behind four hits, three runs scored and five RBI by senior left fielder Tony Testin (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Catholic), the Saint Xavier University baseball team pulled away for a 20-10 victory over Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) foe Cardinal Stritch University (Wis.) in just seven innings Wednesday afternoon at Richard R. Ferrell Memorial Field in Chicago. The Cougars (33-14-1 overall/21-7 CCAC) racked up 24 hits in the game with four of their hitters totaling three or more hits. Testin finished the game with a pair of doubles and a two-run homer to help lead the offensive surge.
Senior right fielder Zach Clements (Berwyn, Ill./Morton) went 4-for-6 with a double, a triple, three runs scored and a RBI, while sophomore catcher Jim Pipolo (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg) finished with two doubles, a homer and three RBI. Sophomore designated hitter Brett Ratajczak (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Catholic) also had a big day at the plate for SXU with three doubles and three runs scored. The Cougars took an 11-1 lead after two innings of play, but the Wolves came storming back over the next two frames closing the gap to two runs, 11-9, heading into the bottom of the fourth. Highlighted by a two-run homer by freshman outfielder Tony O'Shea (Valparaiso, Ind./Mount Carmel), SXU plated five more runs in the fourth inning to push its lead to seven runs, 16-9. CSU would score just one run the rest of the way as Saint Xavier recorded four more runs to end the game early in the bottom of the seventh. Junior right-hander Ken Hurta (Midlothian, Ill./Bremen) got the victory on the mound to improve to 11-1 overall this season. Hurta threw the first four innings and allowed 10 hits, nine runs (two earned) and a walk with four strikeouts. Senior right-hander Joe Branigan (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield South) threw the final three frames for the Cougars giving up just two hits, one run (earned) and four walks with four strikeouts.
Saint Xavier (33-14-1 overall/21-7 CCAC) wraps up its 2010 regular season on Thursday, May 6, with a road doubleheader against Cardinal Stritch. The first game is scheduled for a 2 p.m. start in Milwaukee.
