Palos Heights, Ill. - Needing a sweep to guarantee at least a second place finish in the final Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) regular season standings, the Saint Xavier University softball team did just that by taking two from Trinity Christian College (Ill.) Thursday afternoon in Palos Heights, Ill. The Cougars (29-15 overall/15-3 CCAC) got two superb pitching performances from sophomore Amie Brown (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Catholic) and senior Jalyn Shearer (Beecher, Ill./Beecher) to help secure the sweep. Brown struck out eight in a 5-2 win throwing all seven innings of game one and allowing just six hits, two runs (both earned) and two walks. She improves to 8-6 this season with the victory. Shearer was even more impressive giving up just five hits and a walk in a 1-0 complete-game shutout. She struck out five batters en route to her 14th win of the year (14-4).

Junior centerfielder Megan Paradzinski (Munster, Ind./Munster) and junior first baseman Courtney Murphy (Oak Forest, Ill./Oak Forest) each totaled three hits in the first game, including a solo homer by Murphy to open the second inning. Saint Xavier took a 3-0 lead in the second frame paced by Murphy's homer, a RBI double by junior second baseman Brittany Hannigan (Palos Hills, Ill./Stagg) and a RBI single by Paradzinski. TCC scored its first run of the game on a RBI single in the bottom of the sixth before SXU added two more runs in the top of the seventh to pull away for good. The Trolls would tack on another run off a homer in the bottom of the seventh, but would ultimately fall, 5-2. The Cougars needed just four hits and a run to pick up their second victory of the day. Sophomore shortstop Ashley Hunter (Metamora, Ill./Metamora) drove home what proved to be the game-winning run in the third inning on a sacrifice fly to left field. Junior left fielder Lisa Gryczewski (Mokena, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) scored from third base on the play after opening the frame with a single. Shearer would shut down the Trinity Christian offense the rest of the way allowing just two hits over the final five innings. Saint Xavier (29-15 overall/15-3 CCAC) completes its regular season slate on Saturday, May 1, with a home, non-conference doubleheader against No. 14 ranked Bethel College (Ind.). The first game is scheduled for a 12 p.m. start and SXU will also honor its 2010 senior class in a brief ceremony between the games.
