Palos Heights, Ill. - Behind a perfect day at the plate for senior second baseman Matt Mueller (Burbank, Ill./Reavis), the Saint Xavier University baseball team completed its series sweep of Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) foe Trinity Christian College (Ill.) by taking both games of its Monday doubleheader in Palos Heights, Ill. The Cougars extend their current win streak to 11 games by winning the first game against the Trolls, 18-1, in five innings and taking game two by a 6-3 score. Mueller went 5-for-5 over both games and finished with a homer and combined five RBI.
The first game Monday started off interesting as Saint Xavier scored two runs in the top of the first inning and Trinity Christian answered with a run in the bottom of the frame to make it a one-run game. However, the rest of the game was all SXU as the Cougars scored 16 unanswered runs over the next three innings to end things early. Mueller went 2-for-2 with a homer, two runs scored and four RBI, while senior designated hitter Mark Siefert (Crest Hill, Ill./Joliet Catholic) posted three hits, two runs scored and four RBI. Junior centerfielder Anthony Maziur (Oak Forest, Ill./Northern Illinois/Oak Forest) also had a nice outing going 2-for-4 with a double, a home run, two runs scored and four RBI. Junior right-hander Ken Hurta (Midlothian, Ill./Bremen) continued his stellar season improving to 9-1 on the year with Monday's win. Hurta threw the first four innings and gave up just two hits, a run (earned) and two walks with four strikeouts.
Mueller and senior shortstop John O'Brien (Lake Zurich, Ill./Lake Zurich) each posted three hits in Monday's second game to lead the Cougar offense. SXU led the entire game going ahead, 3-0, in the top of the second inning off a solo homer by O'Brien and a two-RBI single by Maziur. TCC scored a run in the bottom of the second to make the score, 3-1, and both teams scored two runs apiece in the third inning to make it a 5-3 game. Senior right fielder Zach Clements (Berwyn, Ill./Morton) hit a solo shot and Mueller recorded a RBI single for SXU's two runs in the third inning. After three scoreless frames, Saint Xavier added an insurance run in the seventh inning capitalizing on a fielding error by the Trolls. Freshman right-hander Mike Stirling (Thorton, Ill./Mount Carmel) got the victory on the mound for the Cougars throwing all seven innings and allowing four hits, three runs (all earned) and three walks with three strikeouts. Stirling improved his win-loss record to 4-2 with the complete game victory.
Saint Xavier (29-12-1 overall/17-6 CCAC) wraps up its three-game conference series with Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) on Wednesday, April 28, with a nine-inning road game in Chicago. The game is scheduled for a 3:30 p.m. start.
