Grand Rapids, Mich. - Despite a huge weekend at the plate for senior second baseman Craig Buske (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln-Way Central), the Saint Xavier University baseball team left Grand Rapids, Mich., Sunday with just one win out of the three weekend games played against non-conference foe Aquinas College (Mich.). The Cougars (11-10 overall/4-0 CCAC) fell 5-4 and 8-7, respectively, in Saturday's doubleheader and then came back to win 9-6 in Sunday's first game. Sunday's nightcap was cancelled in the fourth inning (SXU led 11-2) due to weather.

In Saturday's first game, Buske went 2-for-3 with a run scored, a RBI, and a stolen base to help pace the Saint Xavier offense. Senior designated hitter Ryan Buchler (Schererville, Ind./South Suburban CC) also had a nice game going 2-for-3 with two doubles and three RBI. The Cougars fell behind 3-0 in the first three innings of play before scoring two runs in the top of the fourth behind a two-RBI double by Buchler. Aquinas added another run in the fifth to go ahead, 4-2, before SXU scored a run in each of the next two innings to tie the game, 4-4, heading into the bottom of the seventh. A fielding error by Saint Xavier helped load the bases with one out and the Saints capitalized with a RBI groundout to earn the 5-4 victory. Junior pitcher Shane Longest (Wilmington, Ill./Wilmington) took the loss (0-3) in relief throwing 1.2 innings and allowing no hits, one run (earned), and two walks with three strikeouts.

In the second game of the day, errors again hurt SXU with the team totaling four miscues in the nightcap. The Cougars scored four runs in the top of the second before Aquinas rattled off eight runs over the second and third innings to take an 8-4 lead. After two scoreless innings, Saint Xavier scored three runs in the top of the sixth to cut the lead to one, 8-7, but could not complete the rally attempt in the seventh. Buske finished 2-for-3 with a RBI, while freshman third baseman Matt Mueller (Burbank, Ill./Reavis) went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and a RBI. Sophomore rightie Rick Kehoe (Palos Heights, Ill./Richards) took the loss (3-1) for SXU going two innings and giving up three hits, five runs (two earned), and five walks with no strikeouts.

Buske also played a big role in Saint Xavier's 9-6 victory on Sunday going 4-for-5 with a double, two stolen bases, two runs scored, and two RBI. Sophomore right fielder Tony Testin (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Catholic) also racked up four hits Sunday batting 4-for-5 with two runs scored and a RBI. Trailing 6-3 heading into the sixth inning, the Cougars scored six runs over the final two innings to secure the 9-6 win. SXU scored five of those runs in the sixth inning highlighted by a two-RBI triple from freshman pinch hitter Ken Tezak (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Catholic). Sophomore rightie Bryant Myjak (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) got the win (3-2) throwing five innings as the starter and allowing seven hits, six runs (five earned) and two walks with four strikeouts.

Saint Xavier (11-10 overall/4-0 CCAC) travels to Charleston, Ill., on Tuesday, April 3, to take on NCAA Division I foe Eastern Illinois University. The Cougars will play a nine-inning, non-conference game against the Panthers at 3 p.m. Tuesday.
