CHICAGO - A nice outing by sophomore right-hander Amie Brown (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Catholic) led to a 4-2 victory for Saint Xavier University in game two of its softball doubleheader with Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) rival Olivet Nazarene University (Ill.) Thursday afternoon at SXU Softball Field in Chicago. The No. 20 ranked Tigers took the first game of the twinbill by a score of 4-1. Brown threw all seven innings of the second game allowing just seven hits, two runs (both earned) and two walks to improve her win-loss record to 7-5 this season.
ONU got on the scoreboard early in Thursday's opener when sophomore third baseman Molly Anderson opened the second inning with a double to centerfield. Senior designated player Shelley Durante brought her home two batters later on a RBI single up the middle to put the Tigers ahead, 1-0. SXU had its chances to tie or take the lead leaving six runners stranded on the bases over the next three innings, including bases loaded with no outs in the fourth frame. In the top of the fifth, Olivet Nazarene added to its one-run lead when sophomore pitcher Katie Hannagan sent a two-run homer over the wall in left field and senior second baseman Rachel Comoglio posted a RBI double later in the inning to help extend her team's lead to 4-0. A RBI single by junior first baseman Courtney Murphy (Oak Forest, Ill./Oak Forest) in the bottom of the fifth would be all the Cougars would score the rest of the way. Senior right-hander Jalyn Shearer (Beecher, Ill./Beecher) got the loss (13-4) for SXU throwing all seven innings and giving up seven hits, four runs (all earned) and two walks with three strikeouts.
A big first inning gave the Cougars some offensive momentum in game two as a pair of walks, two key errors and a wild pitch by the Tigers led to a 4-0 lead for SXU. ONU would cut the deficit in half in the top of the fourth inning when Hannagan belted a RBI single to left field followed by a RBI fielder's choice by sophomore pitcher Jordan Reynolds. With Saint Xavier leading 4-2, Brown settled things down over the final three innings putting Olivet down in order in both the fifth and sixth frames and allowing just a single in the seventh to secure the victory. Junior centerfielder Megan Paradzinski (Munster, Ind./Munster) went 2-for-3 for SXU in the second game with a run scored.
Saint Xavier (26-14 overall/13-3 CCAC) wraps up its 2010 conference slate on Saturday, April 24, with a road doubleheader against Trinity Christian College (Ill.). The first game is scheduled for a 12 p.m. start in Palos Heights, Ill.
