CHICAGO - The Saint Xavier University men's outdoor track team competed in the initial Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) meet held on Saturday, April 17, at Olivet Nazarene University in Bourbonnais, Ill. This marked the first time that the CCAC has held a conference championship on the track. The Cougars finished sixth among the six teams competing. The highlight of the meet for SXU was the first-place finish of the 4x800 relay team consisting of sophomores Matt Rychel
(Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) and Brandon Hummer
(Willowbrook, Ill./Hinsdale South), senior Emmanuel Gonzalez
(Chicago, Ill./St. Laurence) and sophomore Dan Hasty (Oak Lawn, Ill./Brother Rice). The foursome won the event with a time of 8:12. Saint Xavier University men's track coach Ed McAllister
was neutral in his feelings about the team's performance.
"This will be a solid conference and a solid conference meet in the very near future," said McAllister. "However, running the meet this early in the season forced me to make some difficult decisions. I feel that we are truly attempting to qualify as many athletes for NAIA Nationals as possible. Therefore, I chose to work through this meet in anticipation of the Gina Relays (Hillsdale College) this weekend. I felt that the relay team ran very well and will continue to do so for the remainder of the season. We had some other good performances, but I don't believe that this meet was indicative of what we are capable of doing as a team." The Cougars travel to Hillsdale, Mich., on Friday, April 23, to take part in the prestigious, two-day Gina Relays. The Gina Relays are hosted by Hillsdale College in Hillsdale, Mich.
