CHICAGO - A RBI double by senior first baseman Nicole Fletcher (Lowell, Ind./Lowell) in the bottom of the sixth inning led to a big 3-2 victory for Saint Xavier University in game one of a doubleheader split with NCAA Division II Lewis University (Ill.) Tuesday afternoon at SXU Softball Field in Chicago. The Cougars (25-13 overall/12-2 CCAC) dropped the second game, 6-2, despite out-hitting the Flyers, 9-7, in the ballgame. Senior right-hander Jalyn Shearer (Beecher, Ill./Beecher) threw a gem in Tuesday's first game going all seven innings and allowing just five hits, two runs (both earned) and three walks with a pair of strikeouts. She improves to 13-3 overall this season with the win.
Senior left fielder Rebekah Ruettiger (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles East) also had a hot bat for SXU in Tuesday's first game going a perfect 3-for-3 with a run scored and a RBI. Fletcher finished the game 2-for-3 at the plate with the RBI double, while sophomore shortstop Ashley Hunter (Metamora, Ill./Metamora) also posted two hits, including a double, and a run scored. Hunter opened the bottom of the second inning with her double and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt. Ruettiger then brought her home on a RBI single to right-centerfield to put Saint Xavier ahead, 1-0. Lewis would leave the bases loaded in the third inning and the Cougars would extend their lead, 2-0, on a sacrifice fly by freshman third baseman Kate Mollohan (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew). The Flyers tied the game, 2-2, in the top of the fifth on a two-out, two-RBI triple to left field by freshman shortstop Michelle Vucsko. However, Fletcher would put SXU back ahead, 3-2, with her RBI double in the sixth and Shearer put down Lewis down in order in the seventh.
Mollohan and junior centerfielder Megan Paradzinski (Munster, Ind./Munster) each recorded two hits for Saint Xavier in Tuesday's second game, but it would not be enough to prevent the 6-2 loss. Lewis opened the scoring with a solo homer by junior left fielder Sarah Hurley in the top of the second inning and would add two more runs in the third off a RBI on a fielder's choice and a RBI single by junior first baseman Stephanie Harmon. A RBI double to left-centerfield by junior right fielder Rachel Krabbe (Beecher, Ill./Beecher) and a RBI single to right field by Mollohan brought the Cougars back to within a run, 3-2, in the bottom of the third. Unfortunately for SXU, the Flyers took advantage of two huge errors in the top of the fourth and scored three runs to take a 6-2 advantage. Neither team could generate any further offense over the final three-and-a-half innings. Sophomore right-hander Amie Brown (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Catholic) got the loss (6-5) throwing the first five innings and giving up five hits, six runs (three earned) and two walks with three strikeouts.
Saint Xavier (25-13 overall/12-2 CCAC) returns to action on Thursday, April 22, with a huge conference home doubleheader against league-leading and No. 20 ranked Olivet Nazarene University (Ill.). The first game is scheduled for a 3 p.m. start.
