CHICAGO - Junior Ashley Shearer (Beecher, Ill./Beecher) threw a perfect game Friday to help set the tone for a No. 23 ranked Saint Xavier University softball team doubleheader sweep of Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) foe Calumet College (Ind.) at the SXU Softball Field in Chicago. The Cougars (10-6 overall/4-0 CCAC) won the first game of the doubleheader, 11-0, and then went on to defeat the Crimson Wave, 8-0, (six innings) in the nightcap. Both games were scheduled as seven-inning affairs, but ended early due to the eight-run rule after five innings.
Shearer threw all five innings of game one Friday and racked up nine strikeouts en route to her perfect game performance. Freshman designated player Nicole Fletcher (Lowell, Ind./Lowell) paced the offensive attack for Saint Xavier in the day's first game going 3-for-3 with two doubles, two runs scored, and two RBI. Senior right fielder Nicole Barker (Chicago Heights, Ill./Marian Catholic) and sophomore third baseman Megen Friscia (Homer Glen, Ill./Lockport) were both tough at the plate as well each going 2-for-3 with a run scored and two RBI. SXU belted out eight hits in the ballgame.
Junior righthander Nicolle Bartels (Chicago, Ill./Marian Catholic) threw a great game as well in the nightcap throwing all six innings and giving just one hit and no walks with four strikeouts. Senior shortstop Samantha Lovato (Oak Forest, Ill./Eisenhower) went 3-for-4 with two doubles, a run scored, and two RBI to lead the Cougars on offense. Barker also had another strong offensive performance in game two going 2-for-3 with two runs scored and a RBI. SXU finished with 11 hits as a team in the nightcap.
Saint Xavier (10-6 overall/4-0 CCAC) returns to action on Tuesday, April 3, with a doubleheader against conference rival Olivet Nazarene University (Ill.). The twinbill is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. Tuesday in Bourbonnais, Ill.
