Westville, Ind. - Cranking out 26 hits and 29 runs over Saturday's two games, the Saint Xavier University baseball team completed its series sweep of Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) foe Purdue University-North Central (Ind.) by taking both games of a doubleheader in dominating fashion at Hicks Field in Westville, Ind. The Cougars (24-12-1 overall/12-6 CCAC) needed only five innings to win the first game, 19-3, and then carried the offensive momentum into game two defeating the Panthers, 10-2, in seven frames. SXU has now won six straight games outscoring its opposition, 85-20, over the stretch.
The Cougars wasted no time warming up their bats in Saturday's opener jumping out to a 7-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Senior left fielder Tony Testin (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Catholic) led the way going 3-for-4 with a double, a triple and three runs scored. Senior first baseman Ken Tezak (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Catholic) and sophomore catcher Jim Pipolo (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg) also had big games each going 2-for-4 with four RBI, while senior right fielder Zach Clements (Berwyn, Ill./Morton) went 2-for-3 with a double, three runs scored and two RBI. Senior left-hander Jayson Koehn (Beecher, Ill./Beecher) got the win (6-2) for SXU throwing the first four innings and allowing just seven hits, three runs (all earned) and no walks with five strikeouts. Pipolo and junior centerfielder Anthony Maziur (Oak Forest, Ill./Northern Illinois/Oak Forest) each homered in the game.
Scoring five runs in the first frame of the day's second game, Saint Xavier took control early and cruised to another big win behind three hits from Maziur. Sophomore catcher Brett Ratajczak (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Catholic) recorded two doubles, two runs scored and two RBI in game two, while junior third baseman Matt Erickson (Oak Lawn, Ill./Richards) went 2-for-4 with a double, a run scored and a RBI. Freshman right-hander Mike Pokers (Lansing, Ill./Andrean) improved to 2-1 on the year with the victory. Pokers threw the first six innings and gave up just two hits, no runs and three walks to go along with seven strikeouts. Saint Xavier (24-12-1 overall/12-6 CCAC) hosts a conference doubleheader against Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) on Tuesday, April 20. The first game is scheduled for a 1:30 p.m. start at Richard R. Ferrell Memorial Field in Chicago.
