CHICAGO - Following a 9-3 loss in game one, No. 21 Saint Xavier University got an impressive outing from senior right-hander Jalyn Shearer (Beecher, Ill./Beecher) and rode it to a 4-1 win in a NAIA softball doubleheader split with No. 25 Columbia College (Mo.) Friday afternoon at SXU Softball Field in Chicago. Shearer threw all seven innings of game two and allowed only six hits, a run (unearned) and no walks with five strikeouts to improve her season record to 12-3. Junior centerfielder Megan Paradzinski (Munster, Ind./Munster) had the hot bat for the Cougars Friday going a combined 4-for-7 with three runs scored and two RBI.
Paradzinski scored the day's first run in the bottom of the first inning of game one when she scored from third base on a fielding error by Columbia's second baseman to put SXU ahead, 1-0. However, CC would answer right back with two runs in the top of the second frame on a pair of RBI hits, but the Cougars would tie the game, 2-2, in the bottom of the second on a RBI single by Paradzinski. However, the rest of the game belonged to Columbia as six hits and four SXU errors helped CC score seven unanswered runs in the fourth and fifth innings to take a 9-2 lead. Saint Xavier would get one run back in the fifth off a RBI single to centerfield by freshman first baseman Jamie Reed (Lincoln, Neb./Pius X), but generated only a single over the final two innings. Freshman right-hander Jackie Dugan (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln-Way Central) got the loss (6-3) throwing the first three innings and giving up eight hits, five runs (two earned) and two walks with two strikeouts.
Columbia went ahead 1-0 in the top of the second inning of game two on an error in the outfield. In the bottom of the third, junior first baseman Courtney Murphy (Oak Forest, Ill./Oak Forest) tied the game on a RBI single to right field and sophomore shortstop Ashley Hunter (Metamora, Ill./Metamora) belted a two-RBI single to left field later in the frame to put SXU ahead, 3-1. The Cougars would add to their lead in the sixth inning when Paradzinski hit a RBI single to left field. Shearer put Columbia down in order in the bottom of the seventh to secure the victory. Hunter finished the game 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI.
Saint Xavier (24-12 overall/12-2 CCAC) takes the weekend off and returns to action on Tuesday, April 20, with a non-conference doubleheader against NCAA Division II Lewis University (Ill.). The first game is schedule to start at 3 p.m. at SXU Softball Field in Chicago.
