CHICAGO - Senior designated hitter Mark Siefert (Crest Hill, Ill./Joliet Catholic) was one of four Saint Xavier University hitters to finish with three hits as the Cougars racked up a total of 17 in a 21-3 victory over Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) foe Purdue University-North Central (Ind.) in seven innings Friday afternoon at Richard R. Ferrell Memorial Field in Chicago. Siefert also finished the game with three runs scored and three RBI. Freshman right-hander Mike Stirling (Thornton, Ill./Mount Carmel) got the win on the mound for SXU improving to 2-2 on the year after going six innings and giving up just six hits, three runs (all earned) and two walks with three strikeouts.
Stirling got into a little trouble in the first inning giving up all three runs in the opening frame off a RBI single and two-RBI double after putting two of the first three Panthers on base on a walk and a hit batter. However, the Saint Xavier offense came through quickly putting up four runs in the bottom of the first highlighted by a three-run homer to centerfield by senior right fielder Zach Clements (Berwyn, Ill./Morton). Stirling would need no further help, however, settling down to allow just four hits and a walk over his next five innings. The Cougar bats did not cool off though with the offense scoring multiple runs in every inning, except the third. Senior first baseman Ken Tezak (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Catholic) finished up 3-for-3 with three runs scored and two RBI, while senior left fielder Tony Testin (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Catholic) went 3-for-4 with three runs scored. Sophomore catcher Jim Pipolo (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg) also posted three hits on the day to go along with his two runs scored and three RBI. Saint Xavier (22-12-1 overall/10-6 CCAC) wraps up its three-game conference series with the Panthers on Saturday, April 17, with a doubleheader in Westville, Ind. The first game is scheduled for a 12 p.m. start.
