Battle Creek, Mich. - Seven different Saint Xavier University baseball players recorded two hits in a 16-2 non-conference road victory over No. 18 ranked Madonna University (Mich.) Friday afternoon at Nichols Field in Battle Creek, Mich. Junior right-hander Ken Hurta (Midlothian, Ill./Bremen) was stellar on the mound for the Cougars throwing the first six innings and allowing just six hits, two runs (both earned) and two walks with five strikeouts to improve to 7-1 on the year. Junior centerfielder Anthony Maziur (Oak Forest, Ill./Northern Illinois/Oak Forest) had one of the top offensive performances for SXU Friday going 2-for-4 with a homer, two runs scored and two RBI.
The Cougars offense clicked from the onset with Mazuir hitting a solo home run to right field in the game's first at-bat. After scoring three runs in the first inning, Saint Xavier scored in the third, fourth and fifth innings to take a 10-0 lead. The Crusaders would score their only two runs of the game in the bottom of the sixth before SXU wrapped things up with six runs over the final three innings to win in convincing fashion. In addition to Hurta, freshman right-hander Mike Stirling (Thornton, Ill./Mount Carmel) threw three solid innings of relief giving up just two hits, no runs and a walk with a pair of strikeouts.
Saint Xavier (20-12-1 overall/8-6 CCAC) takes a four-day break before returning to action and its conference slate with a nine-inning game against Olivet Nazarene University (Ill.) on Wednesday, April 14. The game is scheduled for a 3:30 p.m. start in Bourbonnais, Ill.
