Romeoville, Ill. - Behind a big offensive outing from junior centerfielder Anthony Maziur (Oak Forest, Ill./Northern Illinois/Oak Forest), Saint Xavier University rallied from a four-run deficit to pick up an impressive 6-5 win over NCAA Division II Lewis University (Ill.) in collegiate baseball action on a cold and windy Thursday afternoon at Brennan Field in Romeoville, Ill. The Cougars (19-12-1 overall/8-6 CCAC) also got a huge relief pitching performance from freshman right-hander Mike Pokers (Lansing, Ill./Andrean), who threw the final 6.2 innings and allowed just six hits, no runs and two walks with seven strikeouts. Pokers improves to 1-1 overall this season with the victory on the mound Thursday. Maziur finished 2-for-5 at the plate for SXU with a pair of doubles and two runs scored, including the go-ahead run in the sixth inning.

Senior left fielder Tony Testin (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Catholic) also provided the Cougar offense with a big lift in the win over Lewis going 2-for-4 with a run scored and RBI. Saint Xavier fell behind in the bottom of the second inning when Lewis opened the frame with back-to-back doubles followed by a homer to take a 3-0 lead. The Flyers would not let up and pushed one more run across home plate later in the second inning to build an early 4-0 advantage. The Cougars fought back in the third inning when Mazuir hit a double to centerfield and moved to third base on a passed ball. He later scored when Testin hit a sacrifice fly to right field to make the score, 4-1. Lewis would not go away and responded with another run off a wild pitch in the bottom of the third to go ahead, 5-1.

In the fifth inning, Saint Xavier finally got their bats warm as junior third baseman Matt Erickson (Oak Lawn, Ill./Richards) hit a single to open the frame followed by a Testin single. After senior right fielder Zach Clements (Berwyn, Ill./Morton) got hit with a pitch to load the bases, senior shortstop John O'Brien (Lake Zurich, Ill./Lake Zurich) grounded out on a fielder's choice to score Erickson. With two outs, senior designated hitter Mark Siefert (Crest Hill, Ill./Joliet Catholic) provided a clutch, two-RBI single scoring Clements and Testin for the Cougars. The two-out hitting continued when senior second baseman Matt Mueller (Burbank, Ill./Reavis) hit another single to score senior first baseman Ken Tezak (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Catholic), who reached on a walk. With the game tied 5-5, SXU kept the offense clicking in the sixth starting with a another double for Mazuir. He moved over to third base on another Testin single and then scored on a fielder's choice off the bat of Clements to give Saint Xavier its first lead of the game, 6-5. Lewis had opportunities over the final four frames to tie or take the lead leaving seven runners stranded on the base paths, but Pokers came up with the timely out each time, including a strikeout with the bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the ninth.

Saint Xavier (19-12-1 overall/8-6 CCAC) continue their road trip by playing non-conference foe Madonna University (Mich.) on Friday, April 9. The nine-inning affair takes place in Battle Creek, Mich., and is scheduled to start at 5 p.m. (eastern).
