CHICAGO - John O'Connell, a senior middle blocker at Brother Rice High School in Chicago, has signed a letter of intent to continue both his athletic and academic career at Saint Xavier University as a member of the Cougar men's volleyball program. The Evergreen Park, Ill., native will be a freshman at SXU in the fall of 2010 and compete for playing time on the court during the 2011 season.
O'Connell is the son of John and Gina O'Connell of Evergreen Park. He is currently coached by Brother Paul Ickes at Brother Rice High School. O'Connell plans to pursue a degree in either marketing or education at Saint Xavier University.
"John comes from a strong high school program at Brother Rice and has some experience playing club volleyball as well," said SXU men's volleyball coach Robert Heersema. "He will help us fill the gap in the middle blocking position next fall."
