CHICAGO - Improving its current win streak to 13 games, the No. 20 ranked Saint Xavier University softball team tacked two more conference wins to its perfect total (8-0) in a doubleheader sweep of Trinity International University (Ill.) Thursday afternoon at SXU Softball Field in Chicago. The Cougars (19-5 overall/8-0 CCAC) won the first game, 10-2, in just six innings thanks in part to five consecutive hits to close things out and then went on to take game two in five innings, 9-1. Freshman third baseman Kate Mollohan (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) was one of the many bright spots for the SXU offense going 3-for-6 on the day with a double, three runs scored and a RBI.
After a scoreless first inning, the Saint Xavier offense heated up in the bottom of the second when junior catcher Amy Kennedy (Pontiac, Ill./Pontiac) and sophomore shortstop Ashley Hunter (Metamora, Ill./Metamora) opened the frame with back-to-back doubles to plate the game's first run. Later in the inning, junior centerfielder Megan Paradzinski (Munster, Ind./Munster) logged a two-RBI single to put SXU ahead, 3-0. A TIU throwing error and a RBI single by sophomore pitcher Amie Brown (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Catholic) in the third inning led to a pair of runs and gave the Cougars a 5-0 advantage. In the top of the fourth, the Trojans got a two-run homer from sophomore outfielder Nicole Eisenberg to cut the deficit to three, 5-2. However, a RBI double by junior right fielder Rachel Krabbe (Beecher, Ill./Beecher) in the fifth and five consecutive hits, including a two-RBI single by Kennedy, in the sixth would plate five more runs and end things early. Brown threw the first three innings and gave up five hits, two runs (both earned) and three walks with four strikeouts. Freshman Jackie Dugan (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln-Way Central) was solid getting the win (6-1) in relief pitching the final three frames and allowing no hits, no runs and two walks with five strikeouts.
Game two was more of the same as the Cougars scored in every inning en route to a 9-1 victory in just five frames. Junior left fielder Lisa Gryczewski (Mokena, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with a double, a run scored and a RBI. Senior right-hander Jalyn Shearer (Beecher, Ill./Beecher) went to 9-1 on the year allowing just one hit, one run (earned) and two walks to go along with her eight strikeouts. Eisenberg provided TIU's lone run on a solo homer in the top of the second inning. Junior first baseman Courtney Murphy (Oak Forest, Ill./Oak Forest), senior catcher Nicole Fletcher (Lowell, Ind./Lowell) and freshman second baseman Ashley Tenerelli (Oak Lawn, Ill./Richards) each finished game two with two RBI. Saint Xavier (19-5 overall/8-0 CCAC) will take part in the Olivet Nazarene University Crossover Tournament this weekend. The event begins on Friday, April 2, with the Cougars playing a pair of games against William Penn University (Iowa) starting at 2 p.m. On Saturday, April 3, SXU wraps up tournament play with two games against Grand View University (Iowa) starting at 2 p.m. as well.
