Bensenville, Ill. - Behind a combined four hits, including a double and triple, by senior first baseman Ken Tezak (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Catholic), the No. 24 ranked Saint Xavier University baseball team split a Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) doubleheader with Robert Morris University (Ill.) Saturday afternoon at Giels Stadium in Bensenville, Ill. The Cougars (15-9-1 overall/4-3 CCAC) won the first game, 10-4, thanks in part to three hits and three runs scored by Tezak. In game two, RMU jumped out to an early 9-0 lead after three innings and never looked back as SXU dropped the nightcap, 13-8, despite a double and three RBI for Tezak.

The Cougars jumped all over the Eagles early in Saturday's first game going ahead, 4-0, in the top of the second inning off a grand slam by junior third baseman Matt Erickson (Oak Lawn, Ill./Richards). A two-run homer by Robert Morris in the bottom of the fourth cut Saint Xavier's lead in half, 4-2, but SXU quickly responded with three more runs in the fifth frame off RBI hits by senior shortstop John O'Brien (Lake Zurich, Ill./Lake Zurich), Tezak and sophomore designated hitter Brett Ratajczak (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Catholic), respectively. Leading 7-2 after five innings of play, the Cougars would score three runs to the Eagles' two in the final two frames to claim the 10-4 victory. O'Brien would highlight the final inning with a solo shot to open the frame. Junior right-hander Ken Hurta (Midlothian, Ill./Bremen) improved to 5-1 overall on the season with the game one victory pitching 6.2 innings and giving up 10 hits, four runs (all earned) and no walks with three strikeouts.

Seven hits and two SXU errors would lead to seven unanswered runs for Robert Morris to open the first three innings of Saturday's second game. Saint Xavier would attempt a rally in the fourth opening the frame with back-to-back singles and then drawing back-to-back walks to score the first of four runs in the inning. Unfortunately for the Cougars, the RMU bats did not cool off and the Eagles made up the four runs over the next two innings to take a 13-4 lead. A two-RBI double by Tezak would highlight four runs in the top of the seventh inning for SXU, but it was not enough to overcome the nine-run deficit. Tezak finished the game 1-for-2 at the plate with two runs scored and three RBI. Freshman rightie Mike Stirling (Thornton, Ill./Mount Carmel) took the loss (1-2) for the Cougars going three innings and allowing seven hits, nine runs (five earned) and two walks with a strikeout. Saint Xavier (15-9-1 overall/4-3 CCAC) returns to its home field on Wednesday, March 31, to take on CCAC foe Calumet College of St. Joseph (Ind.). The nine-inning affair is scheduled for a 3:30 start at Richard R. Ferrell Memorial Field in Chicago.
