CHICAGO - Behind a pair of stellar pitching performances by senior right-hander Jalyn Shearer (Beecher, Ill./Beecher), the No. 21 ranked Saint Xavier University softball team won all four of its games on the weekend and improved its current win streak to 10 games in the process. On Friday, March 26, the Cougars (17-5 overall/6-0 CCAC) went to Whiting, Ind., and swept a Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) doubleheader from Calumet College of St. Joseph (Ind.) winning game one, 8-0, and the second game, 4-3. SXU then returned to its home field Saturday afternoon and took two from non-conference foe Cornerstone University (Mich.) winning the opening game, 4-0, and then getting a late three-run blast by senior shortstop Rebekah Ruettiger (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles East) in game two for a 4-1 victory.

Shearer frustrated the Crimson Wave bats in the first game of Friday's conference twinbill throwing all seven innings and giving up just three hits, no runs and a walk with seven strikeouts. With the win, she recorded her fourth shutout of the year and improved to 7-1 on the season. Ruettiger and junior centerfielder Megan Paradzinski (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln-Way Central) each led the Cougar offense with two hits apiece. Ruettiger also finished the game with a pair of RBI, while Paradzinski posted two runs scored. SXU led, 5-0, after three innings of play and then added its final three runs in the top of the seventh. The second game was much closer as Calumet College jumped out to an early 2-0 lead and Saint Xavier was forced to rally to capture the 4-3 decision. A RBI triple by junior first baseman Courtney Murphy (Oak Forest, Ill./Oak Forest) in the top of the fourth cut CCSJ's lead in half, 2-1. However, the Crimson Wave struck right back in the bottom of the inning with a bases-loaded walk to go back ahead by two runs, 3-1. The Cougar bats would heat up over the next two frames with three hits and a pair of Crimson Wave errors helping to plate three unanswered runs for the 4-3 victory. Sophomore rightie Amie Brown (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Catholic) picked up the win pitching the entire game and allowing seven hits, three runs (all earned) and a walk with four strikeouts. Junior right fielder Rachel Krabbe (Beecher, Ill./Beecher) and freshman third baseman Kate Mollohan (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) each recorded two hits and a run scored in Friday's second game.

Saturday's doubleheader against Cornerstone opened with another dominating pitching performance by Shearer, who added another shutout to her season total (5) allowing just one hit and a walk with five strikeouts over seven innings of work. Murphy kicked off the scoring for the Cougars with a RBI single to centerfield in the bottom of the fourth inning to give her team a 1-0 advantage. Freshman designated player Jamie Reed (Lincoln, Neb./Pius X) would put an exclamation point on the victory with a two-out, three-run homer over the wall in left field in the sixth. Another three-run shot would help decide game two as Ruettiger sent a towering home run over the left-centerfield wall to break a 1-1 tie in the bottom of the seventh giving SXU the thrilling 4-1 win. Freshman right-hander Jackie Dugan (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln-Way Central) earned the victory (5-1) giving up just three hits, a run (earned) and no walks with a pair of strikeouts. Saint Xavier (17-5 overall/6-0 CCAC) continues its season on Thursday, April 1, with a CCAC home doubleheader against Trinity International University (Ill.). The first game is scheduled for a 3 p.m. start at SXU Softball Field in Chicago.
