CHICAGO - Freshman middle blocker Joe Mooney (Palos Heights, Ill/Shepard) finished with 10 kills, six digs and four block assists as the Saint Xavier University men's volleyball team picked up a big Mid-America Men's Volleyball Intercollegiate Conference (MAMVIC) victory against Moody Bible Institute (Ill.) in three sets (30-6, 30-26, 30-19) Wednesday night at the Shannon Center in Chicago. The win improves the Cougars to 2-10 in the conference standings and 4-22 on the 2010 season. It also marks the end of the SXU's regular-season slate in the team's first year as a varsity program.
Freshman outside hitter Aaron Porter (Woodridge, Ill./Downers Grove South) was solid as well for the Cougars Wednesday posting a team-best 12 kills, while freshman libero Justin Garcia (Chicago, Ill./Mount Carmel) tallied eight digs. Freshman setter Jack Malone (Chicago, Ill./Brother Rice) recorded a match-high 25 assists. SXU came out on fire totaling 12 kills and no attack errors over its 21 attempts in the first set for a .571 team attack percentage.
Saint Xavier (4-22 overall/2-10 MAMVIC) will head to Iowa on Friday, April 9, to participate in the MAMVIC Men's Volleyball Tournament hosted by Clarke College. Seedings and match times for the single-elimination event have yet to be determined and released.
