Gary, Ind. - Junior third baseman Matt Erickson (Oak Lawn, Ill./Richards) combined for four hits, including a three-run homer and a RBI triple, to help lead No. 24 Saint Xavier University to a doubleheader sweep of Calumet College of St. Joseph (Ind.) in Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) baseball action Tuesday afternoon in Gary, Ind. The Cougars (13-8-1 overall/3-2 CCAC) had little trouble in the first game exploding for 17 hits and 22 runs to defeat the Crimson Wave, 22-0, in just five innings. Game two was a closer affair, but the end result remained the same as SXU pulled out the 5-3 victory.

After scoring just one run in the first two innings, the Saint Xavier offense warmed up quickly and blasted 21 runs over the next three frames to end things early. Senior first baseman Ken Tezak (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Catholic) and senior left fielder Tony Testin (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Catholic) each posted three hits in the game to lead the offensive attack. Tezak hit a grand slam in the third inning to spark the scoring surge and finished the game with three runs scored and five RBI. Junior right-hander Ken Hurta (Midlothian, Ill./Bremen) earned the victory on the mound in Tuesday's first game throwing the first four innings and allowing just three hits and no walks with six strikeouts. Hurta improves to 4-1 overall this season with the victory.

Erickson, Testin and junior centerfielder Anthony Maziur (Oak Forest, Ill./Northern Illinois/Oak Forest) each collected two hits and a RBI in SXU's 5-3 win in game two. Leading 2-1 after three innings of play, Erickson posted a RBI triple and later scored on a single by Maziur to help the Cougars build a 4-1 advantage in the top of the fourth inning. Saint Xavier would add an insurance run in the sixth when Testin scored Erickson from second base on a RBI single. Calumet would hit a solo homer in the bottom of the seventh, but SXU freshman reliever Lucas Fritsch (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg) would strike out the rest of the side. Senior left-hander Jayson Koehn (Beecher, Ill./Beecher) picked up the win (4-1) on the mound pitching six innings and allowing seven hits, two runs (both earned) and a walk with 10 strikeouts. Saint Xavier (13-8-1 overall/3-2 CCAC) hosts CCAC foe Robert Morris University (Ill.) on Friday, March 26, for a nine-inning game. The first pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. at Richard R. Ferrell Memorial Field in Chicago.
