CHICAGO - Junior first baseman Courtney Murphy (Oak Forest, Ill./Oak Forest) finished the day with three total hits, including a two-run homer in the second game, as No. 21 ranked Saint Xavier University swept a doubleheader from Purdue University-North Central (Ind.) in Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) softball action Tuesday afternoon at SXU Softball Field in Chicago. SXU won game one, 15-0, in just five innings and then cruised to a 7-2 decision in the nightcap. The day's second victory marked the seventh straight for the Cougars, who improve to 13-5 on the season and have started their conference slate with a perfect 4-0 mark. In addition, freshman third baseman Kate Mollohan (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) had a solid day as well for SXU going a combined 4-for-6 at the plate with two runs scored and three RBI.

After a scoreless first inning in Tuesday's opener, the Saint Xavier offense exploded for all 15 of its runs over the next three innings, including nine runs in the third frame. Senior shortstop Rebekah Ruettiger (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles East) led the way offensively going 3-for-3 with a double, three runs scored and three RBI. Junior catcher Amy Kennedy (Pontiac, Ill./Pontiac) also had a stellar first game going 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles and three RBI. Senior right-hander Jalyn Shearer (Beecher, Ill./Beecher) was nearly unstoppable as SXU's hurler throwing all five innings and allowing just two hits, no runs and no walks with five strikeouts. She improved to 6-1 on the year and notched her third shutout of the season.

Game two proved to be more of the same for the Cougars as the offense scored seven unanswered runs before PUNC scored a pair of runs in the top of the seventh. Murphy finished the game 2-for-4 at the plate with a two-run homer, while Mollohan went 2-for-3 with a run scored and two RBI. Junior left fielder Lisa Gryczewski (Mokena, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) also was tough in game two going 1-for-2 with a double and two runs scored. Freshman right-hander Jackie Dugan (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln-Way Central) pitched well for SXU going all seven innings and allowing six hits, two runs (both earned) and no walks with five strikeouts. She improves her win-loss record to 4-1 on the year. Saint Xavier (13-5 overall/4-0 CCAC) returns to action on Friday, March 26, with a CCAC road doubleheader against Calumet College of St. Joseph (Ind.). The first game is scheduled for a 3 p.m. start.
