CHICAGO - Freshman middle blocker Joe Mooney (Palos Heights, Ill./Shepard) finished with a combined 26 kills and four total blocks, but it was not enough as the Saint Xavier University men's volleyball team dropped all of its matches during its own tournament over the weekend at the Shannon Center in Chicago. The Cougars (3-22 overall) played two Mid-America Men's Volleyball Intercollegiate Conference (MAMVIC) matches apiece against Clarke College (Iowa) and Siena Heights University (Mich.) over the event. In addition, freshman outside hitter Aaron Porter (Woodridge, Ill./Downers Grove South) had a solid tournament as well for SXU finishing with a combined 46 kills.
In Friday's first match, Saint Xavier lost to Clarke College in three sets (23-30, 20-30, 13-30) despite eight kills and nine digs by Porter. Freshman setter Jack Malone (Chicago, Ill./Brother Rice) posted 24 assists and four digs in the opening match. The Cougars wrapped up play Friday with a match to Siena Heights falling in three sets (24-30, 31-33, 21-30) with Malone recording 34 assists and six digs. Freshman libero Justin Garcia (Chicago, Ill./Mount Carmel) finished with a team-best seven digs, while Porter posted 13 kills and four digs in the match.
SXU played SHU even tougher in Saturday's first match going four sets (30-28, 18-30, 23-30, 17-30), but unable to pick up the victory. Porter led the Cougar offense with 20 kills and four service aces, while Malone set things up with 34 assists and eight digs. Garcia was tough defensively with 17 digs. In the tourney's final match, SXU fell to Clarke in three sets (23-30, 19-30, 14-30) despite nine kills by freshman outside hitter Matt Yerkes (Palos Heights, Ill./Marist). Porter finished the final match with six kills and team-best seven digs.
Saint Xavier (3-22 overall/1-10 MAMVIC) wraps up its MAMVIC and regular season slate on Wednesday, March 24, with a home match against Moody Bible Institute (Ill.). The match is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start.
