CHICAGO - Senior first baseman Ken Tezak (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Catholic) combined for four hits, including a pair of doubles and a home run, to help lead No. 24 ranked Saint Xavier University to a doubleheader split against Trinity International University (Ill.) in Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) baseball action Thursday afternoon at Richard R. Ferrell Memorial Field in Chicago. Tezak went 3-for-4 with a run scored and four RBI in SXU's 9-8 loss in game one and then went 1-for-4 at the plate with a double and a run scored in the Cougars' 9-1 victory in the nightcap. With the split, SXU now sits at 11-7-1 overall this season and 1-1 in the CCAC standings.
Senior left-hander Jayson Koehn (Beecher, Ill./Beecher) took the loss (3-1) in Thursday's first game throwing the opening 3.1 innings and allowing nine hits, eight runs (five earned) and a walk with three strikeouts. Freshman rightie Mike Stirling (Thornton, Ill./Mount Carmel) pitched well in relief giving up just four hits, an unearned run and a walk with four strikeouts over the final 3.2 innings. The game was a slugfest with both teams racking up 13 hits, including a combined 11 for extra bases. SXU led, 3-1, after two innings of play before TIU exploded for seven runs over the next two innings to take an 8-3 lead into the bottom of the fourth inning. A RBI triple by senior left fielder Tony Testin (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Catholic) and a RBI double by senior shortstop John O'Brien (Lake Zurich, Ill./Lake Zurich) helped plate three runs for SXU in the bottom of the fourth. Trailing, 9-6, heading into the bottom of the seventh, Saint Xavier would make things interesting with a solo shot by Tezak and a RBI single by junior third baseman Matt Erickson (Oak Lawn, Ill./Richards), but not enough to overcome the deficit.
The second game was a different affair as junior right-hander Ken Hurta (Midlothian, Ill./Bremen) stifled the Trojan bats and dominated the game on the mound. Hurta allowed just seven hits, a run (earned) and a walk with eight strikeouts over all seven innings to improve to 3-1 this season. Junior centerfielder Anthony Maziur (Oak Forest, Ill./Northern Illinois/Oak Forest) and senior designated hitter Mark Siefert (Crest Hill, Ill./Joliet Catholic) had the hot bats for SXU in game two. Maziur went a perfect 3-for-3 with a double, two home runs and three RBI; while Siefert was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBI. The Cougars scored five runs in the third inning and never trailed en route to the eight-run victory.
Saint Xavier (11-7-1 overall/1-1 CCAC) wraps up its three-game conference series with Trinity International on Friday, March 19, with a nine-inning, road contest in Deerfield, Ill. The first pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
