Elgin, Ill. - Junior first baseman Courtney Murphy (Oak Forest, Ill./Oak Forest) combined for three hits, including a two-run homer, to help propel No. 17 Saint Xavier University to a doubleheader sweep of Judson University (Ill.) in Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) softball action at the JU Softball Complex Thursday afternoon in Elgin, Ill. The Cougars (11-5 overall/2-0 CCAC) won the first game, 3-2, and then picked up the game-two victory, 3-1, thanks to Murphy's two-run shot in the top of the fifth inning. In addition, senior left fielder Lisa Gryczewski (Mokena, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) had a solid outing at the plate in game one going 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI.

Sophomore right-hander Amie Brown (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Catholic) was impressive on the mound for SXU in Thursday's first game. She threw all seven innings and allowed six hits, two runs (both earned) and two walks with four strikeouts. Brown improves to 3-1 this season with the victory. Junior catcher Amy Kennedy (Pontiac, Ill./Pontiac) got a RBI single to centerfield in the top of the third inning to give the Cougars a 1-0 advantage. Gryczewski added another run in the fourth when she brought home senior shortstop Rebekah Ruettiger (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles East) on a RBI single. Judson tied the game in the bottom of the fourth, but Gryczewski came up big again in the sixth with a RBI double to left field, which brought home the game-winning run. Senior rightie Jalyn Shearer (Beecher, Ill./Beecher) was dominate pitching for Saint Xavier in game two throwing the complete game and giving up just six hits, a run (unearned) and three walks with two strikeouts. She is now 5-1 overall on the mound to start the season. JU scored first with a run in the bottom of the first inning off a walk with the bases loaded. Kennedy was able to tie the game in the top of the second when she scored following a single by Ruettiger. After two scoreless innings, Murphy would come up with the two-run bomb to left field to provide the go-ahead runs. Shearer would shut down the Eagles' bats over the next three innings allowing just two hits and no runs the rest of the way.

Saint Xavier (11-5 overall/2-0 CCAC) continues its season on Saturday, March 20, with a home doubleheader against non-conference foe Clarke College (Iowa). The twinbill is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start at SXU Softball Field in Chicago.
