Kansas City, Mo. - Despite team-bests of 20 points and nine rebounds by junior forward Jake Listebarger (Harvard, Ill./McHenry County/Richmond-Burton), the Saint Xavier University men's basketball team could not slow down the high-powered offense of No. 2 ranked Oklahoma Baptist University (Okla.) and fell, 96-72, Wednesday evening in the first round of the 2010 Buffalo Funds-NAIA Division I Men's Basketball National Championship at Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City, Mo. The Cougars fell behind early in the ballgame and gave up 62 points to the Bison in first-half action behind 73 percent (24-for-33) shooting from the field to trail by 24 points, 62-38, at the break. SXU ends its season with a 23-10 overall record and makes its sixth appearance at the national tournament over the last eight seasons. Oklahoma Baptist improves to 29-3 overall this season with the victory.
Junior guard Stan Mayfield (Snellville, Ga./McKendree University/Shiloh) finished with 15 points Wednesday for Saint Xavier, while senior guard Julian Scott (Country Club Hills, Ill./Hillcrest) wrapped up a stellar career with the Cougars with five points, five rebounds and an assist. Scott finishes his four-year career with 1,383 points placing him at No. 15 all-time on SXU's career scoring list as well as No. 13 in career rebounds (632) and tied for No. 6 all-time in career assists (381). The Cougars shot just 35 percent (26-for-74) from the floor and struggled defensively in the post allowing 66 points in the paint. The Bison were led by senior forward Nate Brumfield, who finished with a game-high 30 points in addition to a team-best eight rebounds. SXU got into foul trouble early on giving OBU easy opportunities to score both inside the paint and at the charity stripe, where the Bison connected on 14 of their 17 attempts in the first half (82 percent). Saint Xavier ends its impressive 2009-10 campaign with a 23-10 overall record and finished third in the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) regular-season standings with a 7-3 mark.
