CHICAGO - Despite 12 kills by freshman outside hitter Aaron Porter (Woodridge, Ill./Downers Grove South), the Saint Xavier University men's volleyball team lost a Mid-America Men's Volleyball Intercollegiate Conference (MAMVIC) match to Cardinal Stritch University (Wis.) in three sets (23-30, 26-30, 24-30) Tuesday evening at the Shannon Center in Chicago. The loss drops the Cougars to 1-6 in the conference standings and 3-18 on the 2010 season. It also marks the eighth straight setback for SXU after defeating Moody Bible Institute (Ill.) in MAMVIC action back on February 17.
Freshman middle blocker Joe Mooney (Palos Heights, Ill./Shepard) had a nice outing for the Cougars Tuesday finishing with five kills and a block assist. Freshman setter Jack Malone (Chicago, Ill./Brother Rice) orchestrated the offensive attack for SXU recording a team-best 26 assists, while freshman libero Justin Garcia (Chicago, Ill./Mount Carmel) was tough defensively with nine digs.
Saint Xavier (3-18 overall/1-6 MAMVIC) hosts a three-team tournament this weekend at the Shannon Center, which begins on Friday, March 19. SXU, along with Clarke College (Iowa) and Siena Heights University (Mich.), will kick off the event on 4 p.m. Friday with a match between the host Cougars and Clarke College.
