St. Charles, Mo. - Junior centerfielder Megan Paradzinski (Munster, Ind./Munster) recorded a combined four hits, two runs scored and a RBI to help lead No. 17 ranked Saint Xavier University to a doubleheader sweep of Lindenwood University (Mo.) in NAIA softball action Saturday afternoon at the Lou Brock Complex in St. Charles, Mo. The Cougars (9-5 overall) held off a late rally by the Lions to win, 5-4, in game one and then broke up a 2-2 tie with a three-run, fifth inning to capture a 5-3 victory in the second game. Senior right-hander Jalyn Shearer (Beecher, Ill./Beecher) and freshman rightie Jackie Dugan (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln-Way Central) picked up the pitching victories for SXU Saturday, while sophomore right-hander Amie Brown (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Catholic) logged her first save in the opening game.
Paradzinski led the Saint Xavier offense in the first game going 3-for-4 at the plate with a run scored and a RBI, while junior catcher Amy Kennedy (Pontiac, Ill./Pontiac) went 2-for-4 with a homer and two RBI. Junior right fielder Rachel Krabbe (Beecher, Ill./Beecher) also had a solid offensive showing in game one with two hits, including a double, a run scored and a RBI. Shearer threw the first five innings and got the first-game victory (4-1) allowing eight hits, four runs (one earned) and three walks with a strikeout. Brown pitched the final two frames and gave up just one hit and a walk with no runs. SXU scored two runs in the top of the first inning to take an early lead and then would add three more in the fourth inning to go ahead, 5-0. However, the Lions would attempt a late rally and scored four unanswered runs in the fourth and fifth innings to pull within a run. Brown would keep Lindenwood from tacking on any additional runs and secured the save.
The Cougars would go ahead, 2-0, early in game two as well scoring a run in each of the first two frames. The Lions would tie things up with two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, but SXU would respond immediately with three runs in the top of the fifth highlighted by a RBI double by Brown. Trailing 5-2, Lindenwood would add a run in the bottom of the sixth inning, but would pull no closer the rest of the way. Dugan was stellar pitching the entire seven-inning affair for the Cougars and allowing just seven hits, three runs (two earned) and four walks with seven strikeouts. She improves to 3-1 on the season.
Saint Xavier (9-5 overall) opens its Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) slate on Thursday, March 18, with a road doubleheader against Judson University (Ill.). The first game is scheduled for a 4 p.m. start in Elgin, Ill.
