Johnson City, Tenn. - Behind an All-American performance in the indoor mile by senior Lauren Dentzman
(Lemont, Ill./Lemont), the Saint Xavier University women's track team capped its indoor season in impressive fashion over the weekend setting numerous records and personal-bests at the 30th Annual NAIA National Indoor Track and Field Championships in Johnson City, Tenn. Dentzman completed the mile run in a school record time of 5:07.15, which placed her fifth overall in the finals and earned her All-American status. In addition, SXU women's track coach Lisa Ebel
was named the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) Women's Indoor Track Coach of the Year and the Cougars were awarded the NAIA's Buffalo Stars Five-Star Champion of Character Award for their community service efforts throughout the season.
There was no shortage of top performers for SXU over the weekend, including senior Amy Poull
(Oak Forest, Ill./Oak Forest) finishing 15th out of 30 runners in the 5K (5,000 meters) with a school-record time of 18:28.60. Freshman Mercedes Mancha
(Elgin, Ill./Streamwood) notched a season-best time in the 3,000-meter race walk with a 12th place finish. Sophomore Jacina Sims
(Park Forest, Ill./Rich East) also set a SXU record with her time of 8.03 seconds in the 60-meter dash, which placed her 36th overall. Saint Xavier's distance-medley relay (DMR) team, consisting of Dentzman, Sims, junior Kelly Malone
(Oak Lawn, Ill./Mother McAuley) and senior Amanda Janosz
(Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg), established a new program-best time and national finish by earning 14th place with a time of 12:37.91. Following the meet, Saint Xavier was ranked No. 35 in the entire NAIA as a team.
"It was one great performance after another for our team," said Ebel. "This is by far the best we have ever done at the indoor national meet. Lauren was inspirational in the mile and I am so proud of her for what she was able to accomplish. I am equally proud of the team's Champion of Character award, because it shows just how dedicated this team is to helping others in addition to bettering themselves."
Saint Xavier will kick off its outdoor season on Wednesday, March 31, at the Trinity Christian College Troll Invitational in Palos Heights, Ill. The meet is scheduled for a 4 p.m. start.
