CHICAGO - Senior designated hitter Ryan Buchler (Schererville, Ind./South Suburban CC) went 2-for-3 with a triple and two runs scored to help lead Saint Xavier University to a 5-3 victory over Trinity Christian College (Ill.) in Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) baseball action Tuesday at Richard R. Ferrell Memorial Field in Chicago. With the victory, the Cougars stay perfect in the conference standings with a 3-0 record and move back over .500 on the season with a 9-8 overall mark. Trinity Christian falls to 5-13 on the year and 0-1 in the league standings.

Sophomore centerfielder Don Skelly (Oak Lawn, Ill./Marist) paced the Cougars' offense with three hits on the day. He also finished with a run scored and two stolen bases. Senior catcher Brian Grupp (Granger, Ind./Mishawaka Penn) posted his second home run of the season in Tuesday's win, a solo shot over the left field wall to open the bottom of the seventh inning. The Cougars took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning when Buchler led things off with a triple to right-centerfield. He later scored on a RBI single from senior third baseman Nick Tantillo (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew), who finished with two RBI on the afternoon.

Trinity Christian took the lead in the top of the third with two runs off a single to centerfield by senior third baseman Aaron Werkman. SXU answered in the bottom of the inning when a dropped fly ball in right field with two outs scored a run and kept the inning alive for Buchler to record a RBI single on the next at-bat. Down 3-2 heading into the seventh inning, Trinity Christian led things off with a double by junior shortstop Ryan Tevepaugh, who later tied the game up, 3-3, on a sacrifice fly. However, Grupp's homer in the bottom of the seventh broke the tie and Buchler was able to cross home plate again in the eighth inning to secure the 5-3 win.

Senior righthander Shawn Bosler (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) got the start for SXU and was solid throwing six innings and allowing five hits, two runs (earned), and three walks with four strikeouts. Sophomore rightie Bryant Myjak (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) notched the win on the mound for the Cougars in relief pitching two innings and giving up one hit, one run (earned), and no walks with a strikeout. Sophomore righthander Dan Miller (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Catholic) picked up the save Tuesday putting the Trolls down 1-2-3 in the ninth inning.

Saint Xavier (9-8 overall, 3-0 CCAC) continues its home stand on Wednesday, March 28, with a game against CCAC rival Olivet Nazarene University (Ill.). Start time for the nine-inning affair is scheduled for 3 p.m.
