Sanford, Fla. - Senior first baseman Ken Tezak (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Catholic) posted three hits, including a pair of doubles, to help lead No. 24 Saint Xavier University to a doubleheader sweep of Brescia University (Ky.) in NAIA baseball action Thursday afternoon at Sanford Stadium in Sanford, Fla. The Cougars (6-3 overall) won the first game, 4-3, thanks in part to three RBI from Tezak and then scored two late runs to rally and defeat the Bearcats, 3-2, in the nightcap. Senior left-hander Jayson Koehn (Beecher, Ill./Beecher) and senior rightie Bryant Myjak (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) both improved to 2-0 on the young season with the victories on the mound Thursday for SXU.

In the first game, Brescia jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first inning off a sacrifice fly to right field. However, the Cougars answered in the bottom of the second when sophomore catcher Jim Pipolo (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg) hit a RBI single that brought home senior designated hitter Mark Siefert (Crest Hill, Ill./Joliet Catholic), who opened the frame with a double. A RBI double by Tezak in the third inning gave SXU the lead, 2-1, and the Cougars would add two additional runs in the fifth off a two-RBI double by Tezak to pull away for good. Koehn threw all seven innings for Saint Xavier allowing seven hits, three runs (all earned) and two walks with five strikeouts.

Junior third baseman Matt Erickson (Oak Lawn, Ill./Richards) was the lone Cougar player to post multiple hits in Thursday's second game going 2-for-3 with a double and a RBI. After SXU went ahead 1-0 off Erickson's RBI single in the top of the fourth, Brescia responded with two runs off three straight hits to open the frame, including a RBI triple. The game-tying run would score for the Cougars off a fielder's choice in the fifth inning and sophomore second baseman Tom Simek (New Lenox, Ill./St. Laurence) would bring home the game-winning RBI on a walk with the bases loaded in the sixth. Myjak threw the first six innings of the game and gave up just four hits, two runs (both earned) and two walks with three strikeouts. Saint Xavier University (6-3 overall) will take on Flagler College (Fla.) in a nine-inning affair on Friday, March 5. The game is scheduled for a 4 p.m. (eastern) start in St. Augustine, Fla.
